Offside Decisions 30% Faster: The Infrastructure Reuse Ledger of Sports Data Sources

On October 30, the Argentine Football Association officially announced an expanded partnership with Genius Sports to bring semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) to the top-flight Liga Profesional. The debut is set for December 12 at the Clausura final at the Estadio Diego Armando Maradona in La Plata, with a full league rollout starting from the new season in July 2027.

The technical path is not complicated: computer vision cameras are installed in the stadium, and the GeniusIQ platform turns the match into a digital mirror in real time. The system automatically identifies the moment the ball is played, flags attacking and defending players who may be offside, pushes this to the VAR referee, and then generates a three-dimensional offside graphic that broadcasters and stadium big screens can use directly. Officials gave one figure: after this system was deployed in the Premier League, Liga MX, Brasileirão, CONMEBOL competitions, and the Belgian Pro League, average offside decision time was cut by more than 30%.

What is more worth noting is another part of the ledger: the same camera tracking infrastructure can be reused beyond officiating. Coach analysis data, broadcast graphics, and fan-facing interactive products all grow out of the same tracking data. For the Argentine Football Association, this amounts to one deployment benefiting multiple product lines.

For operators building white-label platforms, the logic of choosing sports data sources is similar: what you ask vendors is not only what data you are buying today, but whether the collection infrastructure can be reused across multiple scenarios. Underlying assets such as camera networks and tracking data pipelines can support three bills at once—officiating, broadcasting, and analysis—with a single investment, and when amortized, the unit cost is much lower than buying separately.

When building sports modules for white-label platforms, it is worth putting "data infrastructure reusability" on the selection checklist: whether frame-level tracking data can simultaneously feed the live streaming pipeline and featured placement scenarios, and how many types of needs one deployment on the collection side can cover. Asking these questions clearly before signing the contract is much cheaper than additional procurement afterward.
